Authors: Cardoso, Jorge C. S.; Figueiredo, Humberto; Correia, Virgílio Hipólito
Abstract: Digital tools have the potential to help document and disseminate knowledge about, and engage people with cultural heritage artifacts. They can also help bridge the gap between physical and virtual heritage facilitating the comprehension of the context of usage while at the same time opening up the possibilities inherent to digital visualization.
In the context of Creatour's pilot project "Mosaic-Conímbriga and Sicó" we are creating the foundations for the integration of digital tools in the exploration of the vast Roman mosaic patrimony in the Sicó region. Specifically, we are developing software applications that will contribute to - enhancing visits to mosaic sites by taking advantage of Augmented Reality (AR) in mobile devices (e.g., to display digital information over the physical mosaics, extending the amount of information associated with mosaics), - increase awareness about roman mosaics in young audiences by developing computer tools for the creation of digital mosaics by different means (painter-like tools, computer programming tools, photograph "mosaicing" tools), - integration and re-interpretation of content by allowing the visualization of digitally created creative content in the context of physical roman mosaics (e.g., a virtual restoration of a mosaic created by children visualized through AR on top of the physical mosaic), - create a geographical database of mosaics in the region, raising awareness about less visited sites and providing in-situ and in-context information about specific Roman mosaics.
In this presentation we will describe the various planned initiatives and present results regarding the first version of an AR application in the context of the Conímbriga site.

Authors: Cardoso, Jorge C. S.; Belo, André
Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) development frameworks have different recognition performance on different kinds of target images. In this work, we studied AR frameworks applied in the context of outdoor Roman mosaic ruins with the final aim of developing a multi-platform mobile AR application. We started by analysing the documented features of existing frameworks to determine the feasible ones. This resulted in the selection of three frameworks: CraftAR, PixLive, and Wikitude. We then experimentally evaluated the performance of the target recognition features against real mosaics by measuring the recognition delay, minimum required target area, visual alignment and visual stability. Results indicate a good recognition rate for CraftAR and a poor recognition rate for Wikitude. CraftAR showed better recognition delay and visual stability, while PixLive showed better minimum required target area and visual alignment.

Abstract: Since the Middle Ages, perhaps even before, the questions related to the historical and cultural past, mainly to
the level of archaeological findings, have exerted an enormous and mysterious allure on Man. Ever since then, Man
has come up with methods and forms to recreate such places, in order to satisfy this recognized natural and ancestral
curiosity associated to the human being.
Mainly in these last few years, the rise in the number of projects involving this thematic (historical
reconstruction), has been real and effective, due to two main factors: the increasing technological development that
allows such designs to be accomplished more easily, with a larger impact, affecting a greater number of people; and
the continuous and increasing interest of humanity in these questions related to its cultural and architectural
patrimony. This is the reason that legitimises the work presented in this paper.
